The Coral Collection was my first, inspired by travels and the sound of coral tinkling beneath waves as they met the shore. Have you looked closely at the intricate surface layers of coral before?
For these earrings, I use a technique called ‘etched through’ to create intricate and permanent designs on the surface of the silver. I hand paint a coral-inspired design using a protective resist and then submerge the cufflinks into an acid solution.
This bites into the exposed areas, leaving a recessed pattern. I allow the acid to eat all the way through the silver, creating organic forms and holes in the surface.
Finally, I heat the silver and use a doming block and punch to create smooth, domed forms – evoking coral like details.
